Atlas Fertilizer Corporation celebrated its diamond 60th anniversary in style over three (3) days on October 7,9 and leading to the grand celebration on October 10, 2017. The celebration theme is: “Partnerships, Like Diamonds Are Forever.” This emphasized value of deep and lasting partnerships with stakeholders; vital in keeping relevance and influence of Atlas for the bountiful 60 years of existence.
October 7, Saturday, saw the ribbon cutting and blessing of the new admin building at the Toledo City Plant-site. The ceremony was led by Mr. Delfin L. Lazaro, AFC Chairman of the Board, Mr. Takashi Sumi, President & CEO, and Dr. Antonio Yapha, Toledo City acting OIC-Mayor. During the ceremony, AFC gave recognition to employees who have been with the company for at least 15 years. In the afternoon, a children’s party was held for the dependents of employees, seeing lovable mascots such as Birdie and Grimace sing and dance their way into the hearts of happy children.
In the evening, as a way of showing thanks to the community, AFC sponsored a world-class concert held at the Parola, in the middle of town. The highlight of the night were famous bands Cueshe, and rock idol, Bamboo and his band.
October 9, Monday, saw AFC gear up for the 5th Presidents’ Cup held at the Alta Vista Golf & Country Club. VIP guests and various stakeholders competed in a round of golf.
Sporting their red uniform, and lugging their Atlas-Callaway golf bags, tee off promptly began shotgun style at 8 in the morning. The day was perfectly sunny through-out and players were able to enjoy the breeze along the hills of Cebu. Ending early in the afternoon, the players were in for a treat, relaxing at the country club and for dinner festivities.
October 10, Tuesday, Atlas Fertilizer Corporation (AFC) held its Grand Diamond Anniversary celebration at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. In attendance were esteemed VIPs Mr. Satoshi Mizui – Sojitz Executive Vice President; Mr. Makoto Iyori – Minister for Economic Affairs, Japanese Embassy, Manila, and Mr. Leo P. Cañeda – Director at the Department of Agriculture and more than 1,200 guests and employees.
The Philippines’ oldest and largest fertilizer manufacturer; AFC attributes success to its advocacy of crop specific – soil specific fertilization aiming to help Filipino farmers. According to Mr. Takashi Sumi, President & CEO, “farming must not only be regarded as a vocation or calling, but more importantly as a stable family business.” Through the years, with help from Nissho Iwai, then Sojitz, AFC grew to capture a fourth (25%) of the Philippine fertilizer market, and now prepares plans to expand for greater capacity.
Highlights of the night saw AFC give honor to the Makabagong Magsasakang Atlas (Atlas Innovative Farmer) award to individuals from Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao. The crowds were entertained by world-class acts from El Gamma Penumbra, the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra, 4th Impact, Mr. Jed Madela, and Ms. Kuh Ledesma.
